2. Quick Diagnostic Process: Reading the S5 / S5-Z LCD Display #

The S5 and S5-Z are equipped with a multicolor LCD display that communicates directly with the controller. When the onboard self-diagnostic system detects a malfunction, the display automatically shows a code beginning with “E-“ (e.g., E-06) in the multi-function display area. The number shown corresponds to the specific fault content detected by the system.

Power-On Self-Check #

When you power on the scooter, the display and controller perform an automatic self-check. If any component fails this check — such as the brake cut-off switches, throttle signal, or motor Hall sensors — the corresponding error code will appear immediately. You cannot ride the scooter until the fault is cleared.

S5 / S5-Z Single-Motor Architecture #

The S5 and S5-Z are single-motor (rear-drive) models with one motor. This means the scooter will only display error codes related to the rear drive system and system-level components. Codes E-01, E-03, and E-08 pertain to the rear motor and rear controller. Codes E-11 (front Hall fault), E-13 (front controller fault), and E-18 (front motor stall) are dual-motor-only codes and will never appear on the S5 or S5-Z. If you encounter references to these codes, be aware they are not applicable to your model.

Step-by-Step Diagnostic Workflow #

  • Stop the scooter safely — step off the deck and engage the brake lever. Do not continue riding if a motor, brake, or controller error is displayed.
  • Read the error code — note the exact code shown on the LCD multi-function display area (e.g., E-06). The display also shows ERR in its information cycle (TIME → TRIP → ODO → VOL → ERR → TIME).
  • Inspect cable connections — for communication faults (E-06/E-07), priority check: open the folding stem and inspect the wiring harness connectors running from the display down to the main controller board. Look for loose plugs, bent pins, or water ingress — this is the most common cause of communication errors.
  • Check brake and throttle — ensure the brake levers return to their resting position freely and the throttle lever is not stuck or obstructed.
  • Restart the system — power off, wait 10 seconds, then power back on. If the error persists, refer to the complete error code table in Section 3.

⚠ Safety Notice: Do not attempt to ride the S5 / S5-Z if it displays any error related to the brakes (E-04), throttle (E-02), or controller (E-03). Push the scooter manually to a safe location before performing diagnostics. Always power off the scooter before inspecting any cables or connectors.

3. Complete Error Codes & Diagnostic Solutions Table #

The table below lists all official error codes applicable to the Joyor S5 and S5-Z. Because both models are single-motor scooters, only codes E-01 through E-09 are relevant. Dual-motor codes (E-11, E-13, E-18) are included for reference but will not appear on these models.

Code Description Affected System Troubleshooting & Solution
E-01 Rear Hall fault (rear motor failure) Rear motor Hall sensor failure or loose wiring in the rear motor. Inspect the rear motor cable connector for water ingress, bent pins, or disconnection. If the connection is intact, the internal Hall sensors may require professional replacement. Do not attempt to disassemble the motor yourself.
E-02 Throttle fault (accelerator failure) Throttle assembly The accelerator throttle is sending an abnormal signal. Power off, ensure the throttle lever returns to its resting position, then restart. If unresolved, inspect the throttle cable under the handlebar cover for loose connectors. The throttle assembly may need replacement.
E-03 Rear controller fault (rear drive controller failure) Rear controller Internal fault detected in the rear drive controller. Allow the controller to cool for 30 minutes in a ventilated area. If the error persists after restart, the controller requires professional diagnosis — do not open the controller housing yourself.
E-04 Brake fault (only displayed by instrument or controller self-check alarm) Brake system Triggered during instrument or controller self-check. Check if either brake lever is physically stuck or if the brake cut-off switches are jammed. Free any obstructions and ensure both levers return to their resting position freely.
E-05 Controller undervoltage protection Battery / Controller The 48V battery voltage has dropped below the safe threshold. Fully charge the battery using the original Joyor charger. Critical: After charging, enter P-Settings and verify that P03 is set to 48 — an incorrect voltage parameter can cause false undervoltage triggers. If the error appears on a fully charged battery with correct P03, the battery cells or BMS may be degraded — contact support.
E-06 Communication fault — Display not receiving data from Controller Display ↔ Controller Wiring fault between the LCD display and the main controller. Priority check: Open the folding stem and inspect the communication harness connectors running from the display down to the controller board. Look for disconnected plugs, bent pins, or moisture ingress. Reconnect firmly and ensure the folding mechanism is not pinching the cable.
E-07 Communication fault — Controller not receiving data from Display Controller ↔ Display Reverse communication failure. Verify that the display is properly seated and the main cable inside the folding stem is not damaged or disconnected. Check the same harness connectors as E-06. If the display works on another scooter, the controller’s communication board may be faulty.
E-08 Motor stall protection (rear drive) Rear motor The rear motor is physically blocked or overloaded. Lift the rear wheel and check for debris, foreign objects, or brake pad interference. Clear any obstruction and manually spin the wheel to confirm free rotation before restarting.
E-09 Temperature protection Controller / Motor The controller or motor is overheating. Stop riding immediately and park in a cool, shaded area. Allow at least 30 minutes for cooling. Avoid riding in extreme heat or on steep inclines for prolonged periods. Do not use the scooter in environments below −5°C.
E-11 Front Hall fault (dual-motor only — not applicable to S5 / S5-Z) Front motor N/A — The S5 and S5-Z are single-motor models and do not have a front motor. This code will not appear on the S5 / S5-Z display.
E-13 Front controller fault (dual-motor only — not applicable to S5 / S5-Z) Front controller N/A — The S5 and S5-Z do not have a front controller. This code will not appear on the S5 / S5-Z display.
E-18 Motor stall protection, Front (dual-motor only — not applicable to S5 / S5-Z) Front motor N/A — The S5 and S5-Z are single-motor models. This code will not appear on the S5 / S5-Z display.

📌 Note: The S5 and S5-Z are single-motor (rear-drive) scooters. Only error codes E-01 through E-09 are applicable. Codes E-11, E-13, and E-18 are listed for reference only — they appear exclusively on dual-motor Joyor models (e.g., S8-S, S10-S, T-PRO) and will never display on the S5 or S5-Z.

4. P-Settings Parameter Table & Factory Reset Guide #

Battery Maintenance Essentials #

The S5 and S5-Z are equipped with a 48V 13Ah lithium battery. The S-Series battery can be charged at least 800 times and used more than 1,000 times under normal use. Proper maintenance is essential for maximizing battery lifespan and preserving warranty coverage:

  • First-time use: Fully charge the battery before riding for the first time. For initial use, try to fully charge and use until almost exhausted (but not completely exhausted) to optimize battery capacity.
  • Monthly charging: If the scooter will not be used for a long time, charge it at least once every 30 days. Keep the charging port clean and dry.
  • Charging environment: Charge in a dry, well-ventilated area. Lithium batteries can be dangerous while charging — charge in an open area. Never charge in enclosed spaces or near flammable materials. If the charger becomes excessively hot, stop charging immediately.
  • Charging procedure: Open the charging port cover, insert the charger output connector. Red light = charging in progress. Green light = fully charged. Unplug the charger from the power source first, then disconnect from the scooter.
  • Charging interlock: The scooter cannot be switched on during charging; it can only be powered on after the charger is unplugged.
  • Use original charger only: Always use the charger supplied with the scooter. Do not use it for other devices. Do not use chargers from other manufacturers — resulting malfunctions are not covered by warranty.
  • Supervised charging: Do not charge the scooter unattended. Do not charge overnight. Always monitor the charging process and avoid overcharging.
  • Storage: Avoid storing the scooter in excessively damp locations, in direct sunlight, or in high-temperature enclosed spaces. Do not store at temperatures below 0°C or under direct sunlight.
  • Temperature limits: Do not use the scooter in environments below −5°C. Keep away from flammable materials and open flames.
  • Keep charging port sealed: Always ensure the charging port cover is closed before riding. Moisture in the port can cause short circuits.

Routine Maintenance Recommendations #

  • Tires: The S5 / S5-Z use air-filled tube tires (pneumatic). Check tire pressure regularly — recommended 3.5 bar to reduce wear, improve range, and prevent tube pressure loss or tire blowout. If tires are visibly worn or torn, replace immediately. Contact your dealer for original tire replacement.
  • Brakes: The scooter features a front disc brake and rear motor brake system. Regularly check brake pad thickness; if significant wear is present, replace promptly to prevent brake failure.
  • Monthly inspection: Check the scooter and its tires monthly. Verify all screws are tight — if loose, tighten or replace promptly.
  • High-intensity use: For frequent or professional use, check screws monthly and consider replacement every 6 months to avoid unfavorable conditions.
  • Lubrication: Suspended or shock-absorbing moving parts should be regularly coated with a small amount of grease (excluding brakes and bearings) to ensure smooth operation and prevent wear, corrosion, and noise.
  • Cleaning: Power off the scooter before cleaning. Wipe with a dry cloth only. Do not use alcohol or cleaning agents. Do not spray liquid directly on any component.
